Cyanide & Cherries, with cake!

Greetings everyone! Today, I am turning 26 (feels like 96, if you ask me!), and to celebrate, my book, “Colour Me In Cyanide & Cherries” will be on a huge discount for a week. If you wanted to grab a copy, now is the best time! Clicking on the photo leads you there.

Third year in a row, I would like to, on this day of my birth, leave you with some poetry to read. Read it out loud and let it echo through whatever  season, time of day or night you are, in hope that all the good lives we are not yet living do not crack our bones with their weight!

Autobiographical by Erica Jong
The lover in these poems
is me;
the doctor,
He appears
as husband, lover
analyst & muse,
as father, son
& maybe even God
& surely death. All this is true. The man you turn to
in the dark
is many men. This is an open secret
women share
& yet agree to hide
as if
they might then
hide it from themselves.

I will not hide.

I write in the nude.
I name names.
I am I.
The doctor’s name is Love.

The Sadness of the Moon

Tonight the moon, by languorous memories obsessed,
Lies pensive and awake: a sleepless beauty amid
The tossed and multitudinous cushions of her bed,
Caressing with an abstracted hand the curve of her breast.

Surrendered to her deep sadness as to a lover, for hours
She lolls in the bright luxurious disarray of the sky —
Haggard, entranced — and watches the small clouds float by
Uncurling indolently in the blue air like flowers.

When now and then upon this planet she lets fall,
Out of her idleness and sorrow, a secret tear,
Some poet — an enemy of slumber, musing apart —

Catches in his cupped hands the unearthly tribute, all
Fiery and iridescent like an opal’s sphere,
And hides it from the sun for ever in his heart.

— George Dillon, Flowers of Evil (NY: Harper and Brothers, 1936)

  8. Happy birthday and hope it was fantastic!

  9. Mirjana, it looks so enticing. I’m going to get it ordered soon. I cannot resist anymore. Just a curious question, do we get these cakes and coffee along with the book? It looks just so yummy.
And wow, you’re just 26. Reading you always feels like you have a hundred lives experience. You certainly have an old soul. Have a splendid birthday!

    • Dear Neeraj, how I wish I could mail these too with all of my books, and have them arrive edible! One correction, though, the elixir in that cup is His Highness The Tea, but I do know how to make a good coffee too 🙂
Thank you very much for the birthday wishes, and for ‘being old’ this is why I wrote it feels like 96 (because it does! 😀 )
      Have a wonderful weekend!

      • That would’ve been awesome. Nonetheless, we can keep the cakes and tea (I love tea) in the menu when we’d meet (if that ever happens). 🙂

  10. Reblogged this on PōeteX and commented:
One of my favorite poets on WordPress! 🙂 I’m sure you’ll be able to say the same thing once you read her blog AND new book. 😀

  11. Happy Birthday!
26 is a great year! I love the title of this post! lol
I want to read your book. I found it on Amazon. which is where I prefer to purchase books. I’m shipping out on a job next week, and as part of my job (costume design) I must read many scripts and script revisions. The revisions are starting to pour in.
I can’t read other things, even magazines when I work, as it clutters my mind. Also, I work at least 14 hours a day when filming.
So, once I return home, and have time to myself to read what I want, I will read your book.
Again, Happy belated birthday! You are very talented, and have so very much ahead of you!
    _Resa xo

    • Thank you very much for the birthday wishes, Resa!
You do an amazing job! I find myself lying in bed, crafting intricate dresses all night long, but can only shed a tear I have not during my life learned to sew properly. I will some day and hopefully craft a dress that will at least pale before your beautiful creations!
You have also shown me an interesting discovery! I did not know my book is on Amazon already! They said 6-8 weeks, so I owe you a double thank you! If you are ever buying the actual book though, the paperback (I can send you the PDF anytime), I urge you to buy from lulu, because it allows me to set a discount, like I am running now and have you pay a lot less!

  12. Happy (belated) birthday, Mirjana 🙂 26! gosh, you are so young 🙂 wishing you lots of love and inspiration 🙂
damn, so I’m missing the coffee and cookies, since I’ve already ordered the book and waiting for it ♥ maybe with the next book then 🙂 stay inspired!!

    • Thank you so much! You know, there is always some cookies in my house, you are always welcome! I do hope one day we can eat some together on some nice, nature place (or one of those hidden alleys from your photos!) and photograph it all too! 😀
The next book you are getting as a gift, it is the least I can do to thank you for all the support ❤
